This movie was one of the best I’ve ever watched before. TW: spoilers ahead.
This is a story of a tragic hero that goes by the name of Theodore Finch. The movie starts with Finch meeting Violet Markey, a depressed girl of about 17 that was celebrating the 19th birthday of her sister who recently lost her life. Finch takes Violet all across the state of Indiana, where they live, and helped her learn to love life again. He saved her. But, as we find out later on, Finch has his own psychological disorders, and because of this is leads him to act out aggressively and start to lose appreciation for himself. He believes that he’s becoming his father. His flaws, just like with any tragic hero, were leading him closer to his own downfall. At the end of the movie, Finch kills himself. But this isn’t to glorify suicide, as I saw another review say. It’s to show just how much he meant to people. It’s hard to understand why he died, because it seemed such a meaningless plot to the story, but to Finch, and to the people around him, it was meaningful. This happens in real life all the time. People die, all because they don’t realize how much they meant to people. They push the people closest to them away because they don’t want to hurt them, but end up just causing more pain. Finch’s life wasn’t over, but he didn’t see it that way. Now, his family and friends had to live life without him, and who he was. For him, this story was a tragedy that ended in the worst possible way that a tragedy could, but for the people around him, who got to know him, and be apart of who he was, it was an opportunity to see all of the brightest places.
