Margaret Godwin

I really enjoyed this book because it included a lot of interesting, accurate, historical background in the story. The gap between the different elements of society, class differences, were overcome in most cases by the end of the book with one exception. And this is my question - why was it necessary for Hal to die when all other unlikely relationships worked out in the end? I would be very interested to hear the author's comment on this.
