So much fun.
I loved the philosophical issues and the Kung Fu. I loved the way they lit different sets to show parallel universes. I liked the ridiculous videogame lighting, the actors, the soundtrack. I loved the references to "2001: A Space Odyssey", "The Matrix", "In the Mood for Love", "Ratatouille" and so many other movies. It reminded me of early Sam Raimi movies that were low budget but so much fun to watch. Is it an all-time classic? No. Did I enjoy it? Very much.
It's fast-paced, silly, and imaginative, but at the heart of it: it's about finding meaning in a meaningless existence. It's about a mother unable to communicate her love to her daughter. It's beautiful. It's insane. James Hong fights Michelle Yeoh in a nod to Ripley vs the Xenomorph queen in "Aliens". It shows unconditional love by putting googly eyes on a rock. If you like silly movies that run deep, you'll like this one.
As for the one star reviews: that's fine. It's not everyone's cup of tea. But I found literally nothing confusing about this movie. There was not a single scene I didn't understand. It's weird, sure, but it's not incomprehensible or "artsy". The kid from "The Goonies" fights security guards with a fanny pack. How is that "artsy"? This movie is more like "The Matrix" than "Koyaanisqatsi". It's more "Kill Bill" than "The Holy Mountain". If you get what I'm saying, you'll get this movie.
