There are a large number of fairly unpleasant, politically motivated comments on this review thread. I'm going to give you the straight scoop here...THIS SERIES IS AWESOME!!!
I read the Foundation trilogy as a young teen in the 1970's and loved it. I never read it as an adult because I figured that it would never have the same effect on me ever again. I don't remember the plot elements in detail but remember the MOOD, and the VASTNESS OF TIME AND SPACE (although I do remember The Mule quite well, that due creeped me out back in the day!). The mood and the themes of empire, destruction of empire and the vastness of history relative to a normal human life are the great themes, and the series is capturing it perfectly.
As to gender and race, I really did not notice it at all till I started reading some of these rather ignorant reviews. I think that the actors are perfectly cast, and in particular, Salvor Hardin is amazing! Seeing the world through the prism of the culture wars is a personal prison, my friends. Free your mind and enjoy this remarkable series. I cannot wait for the next installment.
