The film “This changes everything”, by the director Tom Donahue. The film’s main point is to show how sexism and prejudice in the entertainment industry have suppressed and marginalized filmmakers who aren't straight white men for years. although the film director is a male he let women take over the show to prove that women can be in the same industry as men if they were giving a chance. The film did a good job of outspreading about gender inequalities to the people by interviewing several women who work in the industry to share their experiences of facing gender inequality, not only that but it also did a very well thing by having female leaders and female filmmakers speaking about the struggles that they faced from gender inequalities.
interestingly, the film uses statistics to show how women in the industry are being discriminated against and treated by sexism when saying “ the top of 100 grossing films in 2018 85% of the writers were males”. This conveys that women are viewed as powerless in men’s eyes and it reveals how women are being marginalized by their gender because there is still no gender equality in our societies today. In some ways, the film shifts its way to show us the harsh reality that women experience in the industry when it exhibits the senses of women being used in the film just for their bodies and sex with the male protagonist. This is absolutely terrifying for us the audience because I know not even one woman who saw this sense didn’t feel anger and insecure about their gender or body.
It’s true that the film did an amazing job by sending its message to the world about gender inequality but, I think if the film talked about intersectionality it would have been more effective. Many of us will say what is intersectionality? Well, intersectionality is a word that was created by Kimberle Crenshaw, intersectionality is how gender, race, sexuality, religion, and disability connect with one another and overlap. We tend to call racism and sexism for women injustices thing but, intersectionality is the most meaningful word that can describe women’s struggles of inequality in today’s society. I believe the film would have been more affected if they interviewed women who are trans actors like Ellen DeGeneres, If someone like Ellen was interviewed it would have set an example to the people who are diverse and from the LGBTQ+ community. This would have been more powerful because it will show that it’s about intersectionality which grabs people’s attention more to figure out what is intersectionality and be informed about it. Something the film contributes to public understanding is women are not growing in the industry historically since the civil rights movement and that because of intersectionality and inequality which we need as a society to work on. There must be a change and to make that change we need to be united and stop discriminating based on gender, religion, sex, race, and etc.
