I am not exaggerating. This movie is in my top ten movies of all time. As far as I’m concerned, it’s pretty much perfect. It’s also the most underrated movie I’ve ever seen.
This film is treated like a random kids movie, when it is kind of a masterpiece. The animation is absolutely stunning, with brilliant character designs and beautiful landscapes, with some truly surreal scenes.
It’s a smart movie, with incredible foreshadowing and symbolism, and a strong theme of identity, progress, and what it means to find yourself, or be a hero.
The “other side of the road,” scene is my favorite scene in all of cinema. The scene has beautiful animation, paired with what is probably my favorite piece of music ever, by Danny Elfman, and some of the most powerful symbolism I’ve ever seen.
It’s a good liar reveal movie. I firmly stand by that something shouldn’t be attacked for being a cliche if it’s done right. This “cliche” is done right. The “twist” can be seen from a mile away, but the movie is clearly designed that way. It’s not meant to be a surprise. We’re supposed to connect the dots.
There are some genuine surprises in here, where foreshadowing pays off. There are some very heroic and earned moments in this movie.
The music is also very good. Besides that one scene I mentioned , the score is still excellent, and it’s probably the best western theme I’ve heard since “the good, the bad, and the ugly.”
The action is genuinely good. The March of the Valkyrie sequence is really well done, and the hawk scenes in the beginning are hilarious.
Also, yeah, it’s very funny. That’s one of the least important bits to me, but it’s probably what general audience will remember the most.
The only problem with this movie, seems to be that it’s so underrated, that many people who love it will still forget about it, with nobody else around to talk about it or keep it’s memory alive.
This movie is GOOD. Genuinely amazing. It gets almost no respect, because it’s a Nickelodeon movie, and therefore it is doomed to never be held at the standard it should be at.
If this movie had been made by Dreamworks or Disney, it would have been a classic.
