Previously loved reading/listening to his books. But the narration was very monotone and I had to reduce the normal speed on libby to be able to listen to what felt like run on sentence and very fast. Although she did get better as the book went along or maybe it was the reduced speed... through out the book she says Mersa instead of Mercer Mann for one of the main characters name in the story. The book starts out with harsh look at slaves being sold by other blacks to whites. Unfortunately it names Americans only as the purchaser. A bit unrealistic regarding the ownership of the island in this day and age, where all lands in the world are claimed in one way or another. Especially a piece of land close to population and big enough for development. All of John's books I could imagine my self in the law firm or jury or mountain or beach or bar or bleachers... but not in this book, mostly because or frustrating narration, I don't know if I should have gotten a paperback so I didn't have to suffer through the constant Mersa vs Mercer pronounce the rrrrr !
