This first season is very disturbing, but very informative for those who don’t know. I’ve watched it all over three days. At first I couldn’t get pass episode 1 because I got confused and bothered immediately. Growing up in the Caribbean I didn’t really experience racism and to this day it’s still so ridiculously frustrating for me. I’m not familiar with some of the meanings of the things like the song the white lady sang walking up to the home and cat in the bag (I do realize it’s s deep). Things that stood out to me...
1-Religious reference - belief in God, but nasty to His people
2-Mental health in the black community - recurring dreams of the trauma
3-Degrading of the knowledge of the black - receptionist automatically expected him to be a janitor (can’t remember exactly)
4-Family bond - Momma didn’t play, outings
5-Segregation - Although they had the education they weren’t accepted in the neighborhood/schools
6-Of course, police corruption. I thought he was really kind, but missed the part (my husband told me), he made a pact with the bank.
There’s s much more, but these stood out.
7- White man despised the black woman, but still “wanted” her.
One thing one of the characters said was heart breaking - “It won’t end.” At the rate things continue to escalate, it’s as if it really won’t.
This is a great movie, but can be traumatizing. Watch with caution.
