The show claimed to be a prequel, but turned out to be a reboot. It fails to capture what made the original Star Trek great, the hopeful view of the human condition. The original Trek was more often than not a Shakespearian style morality play set in the future. The current show fails in this respect with poor writing and a narrow vision. When you are asking your fans to pay to watch your show, you need to deliver. Star Trek Discovery does not!
