Ok, I never write film reviews but I felt like I had to do a super brief one for this, because it's odd to write.
Let me be very clear, this film is BEAUTIFUL. The cinematography is absolutely stunning, the location choice, costumes etc - all brilliant. The acting is absolutely on point from all actors/actresses and there is a definite appeal to the fantastical nature of the entire production.
BUT.
Hoooooooly hell was this film painful to watch. I'm not a stranger to more art house films and I don't mind when films are a little out there. I'm sure a lot of the reason I wasn't a fan of this falls down to me not know the literature it's based off - so I can't relate what's happening on screen back to where the inspiration has come from.
With that being said, this film is absolutely all over the place in terms of storytelling, imagery, how it's portrayed and the background ideas and morals to the story. Rarely do I find myself just wanting to stop watching a film, but by the half way mark I had to take a break and do something else because it just felt like it was FAR longer than what it was. So much imagery / meaning was lost or just totally obscure (again referring back to my not knowing the context based on the original story, but to me if you can't portray that without knowing the original format, you're missing something / failing at the retelling).
There were positives, as stated at the start, and if you want to watch it based off that and don't mind not being able to follow the rest then all the power to you. But If i'd known the experience was going to be what it was, I (unfortunately) wouldn't have bothered.
That was a hard watch. Good luck to you.
