This is a poor series, thoroughly disappointing. I stopped watching after the 3rd episode. It seems a betrayal of such a rich story tradition, with this iteration just fluff and bubble. At first, I thought it might have just been the poor acting, but it wasn't long before it was obvious that the writers themselves lack insight into the depth of meaning of the original story. So, they could not even represent that meaning afresh, even less add new meaning and insight. Perhaps the representation of Merlin as now trying to avoid remembering the greatest of his past, by making himself mindless with drink, actually represents that lassitude and shallowness of the present writers.
