If you have ever been in an abusive relationship of any kind, please go into this movie with caution. I was so excited to see LGBTQIA+ representation on screen, especially in what promised to be a happy, lighthearted romance. While there are many funny and heartwarming moments, the core relationship that this movie focuses on and celebrates is toxic, and presenting it as beautiful or even normal is harmful.
SPOILERS:
It was incredibly disheartening to see Kristen Stewart's character get manipulated by her lying, narcissistic, and self-obsessed partner throughout the movie. Worst of all was the "happy ending". After a monologue from Mackenzie Davis's character full of textbook manipulation, empty apologies, self-centered pleading, and bloated promises of perfect future behavior, Stewart's character falls blissfully back into her arms, forgetting all the abuse with a smile and a kiss as cheerful holiday music plays in the background.
I do want more representation on screen for the queer community, but not the kind of representation that promotes unhealthy and damaging relationships. Let's do better.
