I have seen this three times now and still don’t understand the bad reviews on it being predictable and slow.
I think from beginning it is supposed to be obvious as to what the plan is here. That’s sort of the point of the whole thing. This isnt a film where you ask “what” is going on. it’s a question of “why is this happening and when is it going to happen?” Which is where the suspense comes in. The audience gets to tag along with Will as you start out by being slightly uncomfortable and confused (just as anyone would be if put into a situation as strange as this one)
It’s not the fact that “theyre drinking the koolaid” that’s supposed to be captivating. What makes cult stories so interesting is that it seems to be those who are most damaged and vulnerable who become susceptible to falling into something so sinister without even realizing it. From Edens point of view she came from being in the lowest depths of her pain and sadness that grasping onto something so insane seemed calming and reasonable, to the point where she could be broken down and brainwashed into believing that if she chose to take this path, she and her loved ones would all be together and “safe”. This gave her a sense of control and communion back into her life that she lost.
This is an amazing story because it shows just how damaged some people have to be to resort to such a mindset. And then to truly believe that you are “helping” your loved ones to see what you see. These kinds of things are real. And they happen to real people. Which is why the slow burning aspect of this film is satisfying. And the character development needed to be that way in order for it to be so effective. The fact that the “action/ending” of it was so short was also genius in my opinion, simply because it mimics the way time would pass by if this were actually happening. That slow, awkward suspicion of everyone getting back together and catching up for those few hours and then BOOM. It hits you all at once and all of a sudden youre fighting for your life from some brainwashed loonies.
Great movie.
Sorry for the unnecessarily long review.
