I rarely give 5 stars for any movie, book or work of art. I did read this book many years ago and instantly loved it and even though I did like Racheal McAdams in the big screen rendition and enjoyed it overall I was left a bit disappointed by that version.
I have always thought that this story would be better told as a serial instead of a movie because there is just no way to include the nuances and to pull out the various versions of each character in the time with only 2 hours or so to work with. This series includes the comedy, and wrestle between old and young Henry that the movie was missing.
I was afraid of how the writers might change the story to make it more 2022 or that they would just butcher it somehow but let me tell you they have really hit the sweet spot.
They did not merely copy the book. They also did not totally try to rewrite a brand-new story (at least not yet in season1). They stayed true to the character development and hit all of the milestones from the book while including new touches that really do add to the story. Both main actors have grown on me. Great work by all. My only concern is that they have covered a great deal of the book during season 1 so I am left wondering if it will have to go "off the rails" later in order to keep a popular series on the air. I like the character Gomez very much in this version.
edit: Just read that it was cancelled as I finished my review. Very disappointing. This was one of the best new series on the air right now! The grooming accusation is nonsense. This is what it would actually be like to fall in love with a time traveler.
