Alright, full disclosure: I have never watched The Originals or The Vampire Diaries. I just enjoy “magic school” shows. That being said, I don’t think I’d ever like this show regardless of any prior knowledge of the universe. It seems like they shoehorn in every little reference to the prequels that they can, even if they don’t make sense contextually. The plot points also don’t make sense. They come from literally nowhere, and the characters find resolutions through little-to-no effort, and with extremely slapdash writing. Almost every teen in the show is really obviously in their 20s, and they either act like they’re in their 20s (due to the writing) or they’re trying WAY too hard to commit to the “overreacting teenager” act. And there are way too many instances of Hope showing a shred of being open to the tiniest degree, but GOD FORBID, it turns into a lone wolf act OVER and OVER and OVER again, and it is incredibly tiring. There’s no chemistry anywhere, except maybe between Hope and Alaric, which is weird as hell given that they’re SUPPOSED to be teacher/student. What the hell is that about, anyway? I know she’s a tribrid, therefore some exceptions need to be made, but he treats her like they’re in a relationship with zero boundaries and it is SUPER creepy. That being said, I’m a hopeless addict, and I will see this through to the bitter end in the hopes that there’s SOME saving grace.
