Although the movie is a science fiction, it reflects Carl Sagan's philosophy about humankind, universe and religion. I strongly recommend watching the 1980s TV series Cosmos, which Sagan was its narrator and prime writer, in order to have a better insight into many references in Contact. I think what made this movie a bit closer to reality is that it didn't depict the aliens or their world in the conventional images such as those in Star Wars, E.T., etc.
