A very average movie with hardly any depth at all. The acting by Vidya Balan and Sanya Malhotra is good but could have been way better if well directed.
The movie felt like watching her Wikipedia page, which is kind of sad because there was so much good material to work with. Even though they named it Shakuntala Devi, this movie is more about how her daughter remembers her (as they mention in the beginning). So it’s neither here nor there. The fact that “she can calculate faster than a computer, wrote a book on homosexuality, holds a Guinness world record, never had a proper childhood, became an astrologer and even ran elections” was covered in 15-20 minutes while the remaining 100 minutes was about how she felt wronged by her mother and how that in turn affected her as a mother.
Some people may still like it but I personally felt pretty disappointed. It’s one of the “so near yet so far” kind of movies for me.
