As a fan of the DOOM franchise, I cannot review this positively. When compared to the fast-paced, constant flow of DOOM 2016, DOOM Eternal's combat is a mess to say the least.
To have a game where in the lore, you're an unstoppable, immortal, demon-slaying terror, but in game you're forced to whimper behind cover, disengage from combat and pray there is a zombie to chainsaw for ammo while being hunted by demons is a disappointment. Glory kills are not enjoyable, as they are basically a necessity for managing your VERY LIMITED AMMO capacity.
From one title to the next, you go from feeling like an invicible demon-massacre-tornado to feeling like Joe down the street, in way over his head, cowering and hiding because you ran out of ammo for the 83747th time in 10 minutes.
Killing anything more than the two basic zombie units is a chore, and the map design does not let you flow naturally - you will be cornered and murdered on higher difficulties (I played on UV).
This may have been a good standalone game, but don't pretend it's something that it's not - a DOOM 2016 sequel.
This is Dark Souls: FPS edition. If I wanted to play Dark Souls, I would have loaded that from my library.
