I thought this film is undoubtedly a 'classic and an 'epic' without a doubt. It gave power to the two monarchs who mattered most in the 16thC. The male characters were depicted as entirely secondary to both women. This is as it should be. The screenplay was skilful indeed, as was the casting, dialogue and use of setting.
Josie Rourke has show us what women can do in the cinema. The film made me proud to be a Scots woman (who spent forty years living in England) John Knox is reduced to a cameo role, played by David Tennant. On being dismissed from her court, his final words to Mary are "I pray for your soul, Madam" yet he proved only to be a subversive perpetrator of barbaric rebellion. Mary did, after all produce an heir to both thrones (not the only act she is to be commended for) This film is worthy of The Oscar and Bafta awards for its breadth and scope. Well done indeed, Ms O'Rourke for using skill, judgment and expertise for what was a major undertaking, giving both Elizabeth 1st and Mary Stuart their proper place in history. Applause, applause.
