This is a great, comedic post-WWII setting in a movie starring Glenn Ford and Marlon Brando. I NEVER would have guessed it was Brando except for seeing the credits. He never before or since played a role anything as fun as this one. The director managed to drop these two stars into the middle of a Japanese village and let them just play. It is funneee. The hapless Glenn Ford is a bit silly, but it is necessary to the story. Without that, there would be no need for the Brando role.
The movie has the definite flavor of 1950s movies, but the plot is original. it follows the genre of other post-WWII comedies. It is a genre to be appreciated because it is free of the cynicism of so many post-war movies of the 70s and on. It was a euphoric decade after having accomplished nothing less than saving the world.
