Few Australians have made such varied contributions to their country as Charles Eaton. His adventurous life ranged from sharing a German POW camp for recalcitrant prisoners in WW1 with a future French President and a future Marshall of the Soviet Union.
Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands decorated him for his WW2 service as a Squadron commander in Dutch Papua, but as Australian Consul General in Jakarta from 1947-1950, he frustrated Dutch diplomats struggling against Indonesian nationalists.
In this capacity, he also influenced the UN's first peace-keeping role. Between the wars, he served the RAF and RAAF with distinction. This is a handsome volume, well illustrated and well written by Eaton's son.
