I can truly understand the confusion and frustration for those watching the first episode and saying "What is this??? This is not the Perry Mason I grew up with..".
The few counterarguments I would offer are:
1) As hard as it is to admit, we aren't in the 1950s. 70 years have passed and there have been significant changes to many of the dynamics that go into making successful and sustainable TV programs now. The comparison is HBO of 2020, against the 1950s TV shows. It's a big leap.
2) The huge difference in aspects between this broken and poor Perry Mason makes it (to me) that much more interesting and exciting to see how he becomes incredibly successful and the professional Perry we all remember.
I personally found the 1st episode a bit slow, but that's to be expected with all of the introductions to characters/plot. The 2nd episode was truly fantastic. I love the art style, the acting, and the new spin on the series. Can't wait for more.
I encourage everyone to give it a few episodes. Transplanting a 1950s show with the same concepts just wouldn't work like we might want, and I think this is a bold and fresh new take that I actually love to see.
