That our country has been traditionally tough for women is no secret. Indrani Mukerjea’s detailed chronicles on her life and the events that shook the nation is beautifully written, meticulously crafted and a riveting tale told by a woman who clearly lived ahead of her times.
Should the events that took place in the 80s and 90s and set the course for her tragic life happened today, it would probably read differently. But it was when it was, since it is a true account from the author’s eyes.
A mind blowing account that takes the reader to the time and places that Indrani vividly details. The men in her life and the women and children that surround them are detailed to the point that you can nearly touch and feel them, their emotions, cruel, thoughtful and practical as the case might be. Each and every chapter touches you deep and makes you feel like a helpless bystander watching fate deliver cruel blows to a woman that stands ‘unbroken’ and resolute.
Indrani Mukerjea has written an absolute masterpiece, and while the reader might feel that one who is so masterful could probably also carry out a master crime (A discussion I would not be dragged into), the character of Indrani in the book stands tall, and apart from all the others.
A must read for every adult, and also young would be adults. Indrani, the character makes you cry, feel her anguish and your own helplessness and incapability to somehow change the course on which she is treading. The events unfold rapidly, and her landscape shifts from bad to worse and worse still. My heart went out to the character that is so vividly captured by Indrani, the writer/author of this classic.
Even if she committed a crime, she should be forgiven, for the book atones for everything that might have happened. What a woman, and what a book!!!
