I can’t help but feel that this game is mediocre. It’s a DECENT rpg and a poor representation of the Dragon Age series. The story is horrible with a 1 dimensional villain who wants to conquer the world because he’s evil and he has a random cult of ultra nationalists that are somehow thousands strong despite not being in their own country. Not to mention that a MASSIVE amount of information that should be given to the player is hidden in the Codex through entries that are completely up to the player to find. It shouldn’t be the players job to find the story, it’s the game’s responsibility to tell that story in a cohesive manner.
Combat is boring and simplified to the point of tears. Attributes are pointless and can only be changed through abilities. Abilities are SCARCE, with only 4-5 per class and only 3 specializations per class. Origins had 6(with DLC). How can a sequel be praised when it literally strips the itself to the bare bones?
I’d be fine with this if the quests themselves weren’t so miserable though. 90% of what you’ll be doing in Inquisition is some mindless fetch quests where you go and retrieve something, then get NO REWARD. All you get is XP and whatever you find during the quest. This is with ALL of the QUESTS. Some of them are even worse though. In a couple missions, you’ll be forced to escort an animal back to a location, but it doesn’t follow you unless you’re within 5 feet. So, you have to constantly stop, wait, move, stop, go back within range, move, stop to fight something, rinse and repeat.
The only thing saving this game is how fun it could be with the well-written characters. Some are worse than others like Sera or Cole, but Iron Bull and Dorian are fascinating and give a lot of insight into the world itself. Plus the operations were a neat world building technique.
Overall, mediocre, but enjoyable at times.
