There's critics' reviews describing it as 'murky, depressing, muddled' and 'over violent.' Well. The times were violent. There's plenty of merit to the Errol Flynn/Olivia de Havilland version as well, but as a modern attempt, this has a terrific traditional storyline, action, drama, elements of comedy. Alan Rickman is fabulously villanous as Nottingham, Mary Anne Mastroantonio is a georgous Marion; Morgan Freeman is fantastic anywhere and anytime; and the supporting cast of the outlaws and others such as Christian Slater as the bitter half-brother to Robin, Geraldine McEwan as Mortiana - well, she's just enjoying herself as she always did in her roles and Brian Blessed as Robin's father. Accurate historic details, such as the congregation standing in church - four stars because Costner could have done an English or at least neutral accent.
