I feel like Toy Story should have remained a trilogy. This film feels different from the others, in the way that is feels as though it is aimed purely at small children. I find that the absence of a real “bad guy” takes a great deal of threat away from the plot- a threat which was there with the brilliant villains of the other instalments. Having grown up with these films, I feel as though I am a part of a generation for whom they mean more than just an hour and a half of children’s animation. The lack of references to the older films feels as though the nostalgia element is not being catered to at all, and I was left feeling a little uneasy about the whole thing.
However, for an audience who have not grown up with these films, I’m sure it was seen as a perfectly sufficient animated film. One at the same level as Zootopia and the like.
