I cannot recommend American Founders more.
Christina Proenza-Coles presents an inspiring portrayal of the astounding number of African Americans who shaped the New World (North and South America), from Christopher Columbus' second voyage on.
To mention just one example, Phillis Wheatley (1753-1784) was the first person of African descent, and the second woman in the American colonies, to publish a book. As Christina puts it:
Wheatley"literally wrote her way to freedom". Her 1773 London-published book, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, garnered attention on both sides of the Atlantic and engaged eminences including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson and Voltaire.
