Like virtually all of the 1 star reviewers, I loved the original Last of Us, it was one of my favorite story driven games, primarily because of the story. And that's the very same reason I hate this game. Naughty Dog had no interest whatsoever in an entertaining and engaging story line, they simply had a socia-political narrative and a goal to make you feel the way THEY wanted you to feel about the characters in this game, and at that they failed miserably. If you want an answer to why that is, simply read almost any of the other 1-star reviews, it's redundant for me to say it all again here. I have no idea what transpired at Naughty Dog between the development of the first game and this steaming pile of feces several years later, but clearly there was some major changes and definitely not for the better. I have no intentions of buying any of their games in the future after this high speed train wreck.
What I find very interesting though is the Metacritic gave this a 93%, IGN gave it 10/10, and yet almost exactly 50% of the 80,000 people (so far) who played this game and reviewed it hated it and gave it a 1 star review, leaving it with 2.5 out of 5 stars average rating. Tells you how detached Metacritic and IGN are from the gamers, and how meaningless their ratings are. I also find it rather interesting how these reviews are mysteriously sorted by default. As you can tell by looking at them, by default they're not sorted by date, they're not sorted by rating, and they're not sorted by helpfulness, yet just looking at the first 100 or so reviews as they're listed, about 90% of the reviews are 5 stars, even though almost 50% of the reviews were 1 stars and almost 50% were 5 stars. Very interesting... Also, what in the world is the point of having a "helpful" and "unhelpful" button if only the "helpful" number is publicly displayed hmm? That's like Facebook giving you a happy and a sad emoji response option for a post, but only displaying the ones that were happy. And on that note, there's no point in you giving this review an "unhelpful" reaction, because your opinion won't be counted.
