I saw this film 48 years ago. It is a powerful film and forever changed me and my values, particularly in regards as to how far society can go to deliberately set about changing someone. What limits should we set on trying to change someone who is a threat to society? What if he (or she) does not want to change? We do need to protect our communities. Do we offer the choice of recidivism therapies or a life sentence? Do we override the criminal's desire in this choice? I left the theater, having been shocked, having cried, and threw up. I have never seen this film again although I credit it with having shaped me for my entire life and I hope as a better person.
