I’m going to try to be kind, while expressing absolute shock that not a single review I’ve read here yet makes even the slightest mention of the central motif/theme of this magnificent film. It is set in 1923 and, though you wouldn’t know it from these reviews, a war - yes, a WAR - is going on. Directly across from Inisherin. Maybe, just maybe, the fact that it is a CIVIL war (the Irish Civil War) has something to do with the point of the film. It asks: can you just ignore war as it goes on in your face? We do all the time. (Evidently, many or even most viewers didn’t even see it in a film that is all about war.) What do we say in the face of war? “Why? Why? War is crazy!” Meantime, we whistle tunes and while the days away as people die and society crumbles right in front of our eyes - at least, until we come into conflict with someone dear who turns out to be “on the other side” and the veneer of civility is stripped away by fear, recrimination, hatred and revenge. All for “no good reason.” This film outside its historical context is still a beautiful character study, but its point is all but lost.
