Outstanding book. Well researched and quite informative. The best part was that the most important bit of medical treatment the Lewis learned came not from the famous Dr. Benjamin Rush but from his mother who taught him to make a dilute silver nitrate solution to treat conjunctivitis and it was this treatment that may have saved the expedition because bacterial conjunctivitis was epidemic among the plains Indians and they were willing to give considerable compensation to have it treated, including horses.
