Heavy,
Tom is as Loki would say, "Burdened with glorious purpose," as sequels usually are.
But Tom had the burden of working at the height of COVID spreading in the US, and demands of an environmentally safe set that may shut down at any moment, heavy on everyone's shoulders. You could feel it throughout the first half of the movie.
Gone were the spectacular Top Gun soundtrack originals. Gaga's song played as you were walking down the steps to leave, what a shame.
Gone were the fly bys and powerful sarcastic quotes from pretty boyz in fast planes and sharp superiors with the, "I know better," cracks.
Gone were Kelly's stockings with seams and tight shots of stilettos and Meg Ryan's sparkly delicious southern drawl and radiant blonde locks.
Gone was the taboo cougarish chemistry of bedding a superior officer who happens to be a gorgeous female.
Gone is the constant alpha male sparring of stunning Val Kilmer and the baby faced Mav.
We're left with such slow scenes I amost got up and left TWICE, saying to myself, "...it all works out in the end and do I need to wait to see what I already know will happen?"
People, NO ONE survives a plane disintegrating at Mach10.
This movie had heavy Tom's energy winding through every line, every look, even a smiley sex scene. There's just no FIRE, no mojo, NO ZIPPITY QUIPS, NO MEMORABLE lines of LAUGHTER!
Were they only concerned about being filmed inside real cockpits and accuracy and old photos, and who's dead, who's dying, who's grieving, who's carrying old memories or old photos, or old grudges, they forgot to bring passion, sex, chemistry, and aliveness to a fresh team of top pilot actors who deserved to be just as stand out and individual as the original cast!
And of course, Tom was indispensable until the very end. He couldn't bear to pass the torch or be out manuvered by a new hot shot. Heaven forbid anyone out do Mav.
Well there ya go Tom, you carried the whole movie. You're the hero once again.
TOP GUN MEETS MISSION IMPOSSIBLE!
You should've stepped aside.
A good mentor allows the students to stand on the guru's shoulders to lift them to an even higher place than you could obtain, because you are the older technology and your team is the 5th gen tech.
A real opportunity to write the heck out of this flick. Plenty of years to think about it.
Thank you for a really "good" movie.
