Alex Tizon's essay about his family's 'slave' was very moving as a story about human relationships. Most public references to slavery in the past few decades have been knee jerk, ignorant statements based on ongoing prejudices relative to the topic. Tizon's essay, on the other hand, was a moving, real accounting of a family's struggle within itself. It was the struggle between older and newer generations: parent versus child, parent versus slave, and child caught in between the struggles. Tizon transcends the cliches about slavery and brings to life the human realities bubbling up through those family connections.
The essay was mesmerizing, one of the best reads I've had in months. Its truths were compelling, at times so moving that my body quaked with the feeling. Don't miss the chance.
