Loved it. Brilliant. A bit on the slow side and would personally prefer more action and more violence. It's not violent enough for us, especially when it says "strong violence". So we were expecting to see more blood. Great plot and story line. Very original. Loved the fact it's not your normal predictable story line. I am sooo sick of those normal boring overly predictable Santa stories.
I also get the humor of it (dark humor), although other people may not. One of the funnier scenes for us (this below is from memory, I hope I remember every word correctly):
"You remind me of my mother"
"Aww...."
"She's not a very good listener and doesn't know when to shut the F*** up!!"
My kids & hubby were laughing their @ss off at this scene. Right away, I turned to my children and said "If you ever said that to me...." and my youngest replied smoothly "we're dead".
Warning: Don't go watching this moving expecting too much action and definitely don't expect to see a happy jolly Santa. If you do, then this movie is not for you. In fact, this movie will not be everyone's cup of tea. You'll either like/love it or hate it. Watch the trailer first and read up on it prior to going. I also noticed a few feedback mentioning this movie ruins and can be demeaning & perverting to Christmas. No, it does not. I'm a Christian who celebrates Christmas and I was not offended one bit. If you do get easily offended and see Christmas / Santa as super sacred, or if you care way too much about political correctness, then maybe this movie is not for you either.
Despite the slightly darker twisted theme, there's actually a deeper moral / meaning to the story and the characters. It tells you how one's childhood can affect how he/she turns out in life, especially those who do not have proper guidance from their parents or whose parents neglect them. It shows how one bad thing or disappointment can steer someone into a dark twisted obsession / path in life. The story also teaches if you've been good and in the nice list, you will be rewarded, but if you have been naughty, well.... don't expect your dream toys / presents. Although, as my children pointed out, you can just sell the piece of coal and get some money out of it. It also shows even someone who is supposed to be wise and jolly like Santa can make mistakes and need to be reminded of what's important in life. Can't explain too much without giving too much away. We watched it in the cinema and saw that every family brought little children - be warned - there are a lot of swearing in this movie.
One thing I'm not happy with though, I think the naughty evil brat was let off waaayyy too easily. Maybe this is supposed to show that people do get a second chance to fix the error of their ways, no matter how bad they've been... Either way, I would be much happier if the evil brat suffers, even a little...
