To me, this movie was not about the monsters in the background - to those left scratching your head I think you can look at the symbolism. The “monsters” are never shown actually attacking people. One monster kills a dog when it is backed into a fight to defend itself only. It is mentioned they are there to “kill the monsters.. if we see them but mainly to kill insurgents”. This mission mentality produces collateral damage. They themselves become the monsters killing whomever - enemy and civilians alike in their mission. The monsters “spawn” and grow in number with every monster they kill... or you can say each time a civilian is killed by their forces the hatred and troubles for them grow as well. This theme is paralleled through the movie.
