Imagine if you could chemically distill pure hatred, anguish and despair and make into sound... Then you'd get The Great Southern Trendkill. This is arguably Pantera's best album. Vulgar Display of Power get most of the kudos but it was still a little "too commercial", too polished, like purposefully made to appeal to the mainstream, and Far Beyond Driven is a masterpiece in itself but still a little "mainstream conscious", if you will. But with Trendkill, they didn't care anymore. They just wanted to play as heavy as possible and vent all the hatred they felt even amongst themselves (Anselmo had to record vocals apart from the rest of the band because they couldn't stand him and vice versa). The production is technically impeccable but rawer, more organic, perfectly fitting. This could be considered, as Metallica's Master of Puppets or Slayer's Reign in Blood, a perfect metal album.
