Sam Mendes has created a film that starts slowly and never recovers. The virtually non-existent storyline fails to deliver any meaningful emotional content from start to finish, which would have provided even a fleeting moment of respite from the sheer dullness that exudes from this over-hyped trash.
The only redeeming feature is the cinematography, which is splendid.
The musical score is refreshingly understated but still manages to make some scenes very predictable.
This movie failed to viscerally link the characters to the audience, on any level - especially disappointing, given the numerous opportunities to do so. It just lacked heart.
Apart from the lead role, I thought the acting and dialogue were second rate. The 'brother' was awful.
