A lot of people, and I mean about 95% of YouTube comments (You know who you are) say pretty much the same thing along the lines of "This movie is good but never as good as the original" and here's what I say to that:
I don't care.
This movie is on a league of it's own. This reinterpretation of Aladdin is fun, lively, exhilirating, and brings up so many complex emotions and plot points that were overlooked in the original. I was fairly impressed on how they utilized Genie's role as a genie and used that to build his character arc with Aladdin. They emphasized on how Genie has never had a friend before, which makes his and Aladdin's fight a lot more emotional.
Another thing that interested me was the fact that Jasmine had a way bigger role by bringing out her entrapment in the castle effectively, and her song proved that she wasn't the same character as in the original, and that's ok.
Now let's talk about the more controversial characters: Jafar and Genie. Jafar definitely looked a lot less menacing than his animated counterpart, but then again, a excessively large hat with a long beard he had in original wouldn't make sense. Yes, I can't stress enough that live action has a lot more limitations than animation. My expectations were exceeded when they made Jafar look more realistic, and he still was terrifying. I jumped out of my seat when Jafar literally killed someone. I will say that I still enjoyed Jafar despite his less menacing apperance, and I admired how they wrote Jafar to go insane by the fact that he's still 2nd best.
Ok, now on to the major topic: Will Smith as Genie. When it was revealed who was playing Genie, many fans weren't happy. However, I must say that Will Smith did an outstanding job filling the shoes of Robin Williams. I felt like I was watching the original Genie work his magic. Genie in this movie showed heart, humor, and his witty entertainment to go along his iconic song "Friend Like Me" Will Smith played the Genie in his own fun way, and it worked. He showed originality with the character instead of immitating it word for word. That gives this Genie personality, and will eventually make him iconic to future generations. Although his bestowing moments have been more on the negative response, I found it enjoyable on how they mashed the classical Arabian style music while complementing the rythym of beatbox and rap.
Aladdin, well, he was Aladdin. He had this cheeky side of him, and even added more to his perceptive personality by analzyzing the Princess while still being somewhat clueless, and that's what I loved about Aladdin. This Aladdin was cunning, agile, humorous, and just an overall interesting character in this movie.
Just like the original, the visual effects and settings of the film were gorgeous. The choreography was magnificent, and this film is an eyesore, with magnificent views and wonders to be brought about with its appearances throughout the movie.
I'm not saying this movie is better than the original, but I'm also not saying this movie is worse or even as good. This live action Aladdin gives the audience a whole new world to look at (Reference entirely intended). It brings a new perspective on how the magic of Disney has changed, and how that affected the emotional impact of this movie.
Overall, this movie is ironically original despite it being a retelling of the animated Aladdin. Just go see this movie" and you will understand how this filn can't be compared to the animated Aladdin nor can it be differed from it.
I can't find any definitive flaw. 10/10 for my standards
