People here are criticizing the portrayal:
* That the Rivera Family was ghetto—They were, they are. They come from very humble beginnings
* That the series is normalizing abuse and machismo —They ARE NOT normalizing it. They are portraying it like it happened. They can’t change the story of Jose Marin, he was a sick man. Señora Rosa, The aunt (Sr Pedro Rivera’s sister) and the things they say about putting up with men. THAT IS THE WAY IT WAS!!! It’s not about the series trying to normalize as a reference for present day, but if they went against it then they wouldn’t be telling the story CORRECTLY.
You can’t grade this on the story line.
My problem with the depiction of the series is that it was portrayed as the Rivera Family speaking MAINLY SPANISH using a very correct way of speaking it as if they had grown up in Mexico. We all know they grew up in Long Beach and they spoke “Pocho” Spanish, SPANGLISH and very perfect English.
The actors that were chosen speak little to zero English..
This was what Ruined it for me.
Juan ( the actor) as an adult….. can’t speak a drop of English and we all know the real Juan speaks mostly English and his Spanish is poor.
So this depiction failed tremendously
