A very, very old Mexican cultural (Grimm-like story) folklore explained through an American Movie production.
I grew up with this story told in many versions.
Through family, it can be tragically told as a failed romance, such as a disruptive kid's warning to settle down.
But as you get older, there's different versions of the folklore explained.
Yup, through the American logic of voodoo, but in a different culture referring to the "brujadia".
Even today, it is tremendously strong in DEEP Latin American areas. The more secluded, the stronger the belief.
Many curses, spells, and hexes through mothers, wives, and desperate people.
But that's another story such as Anabelle. That's lightly mentioned in the movie.
I like the things done in the movie as I can recall things growing up in my culture.
Of course, not ALL was brought up in the movie. Such as the cold breeze blowing that points out a spirit is present. The mirror spot is shown but not explained. The burning of candles is done and referring to it's worth. Even the egg trick! So if you grew up with this folklore, it's kinda fun looking for those spooky things that your grandma, "buela", warned you about.
Thinking of seeing it again.
