Honestly, I don’t know what I thought this show was about. I saw Ru on SNL and has to check it out. I am absolutely NOT shocked that critics are lukewarm on this show. 🙄🙄🙄 But, then again, it’s us Average Folk that are most capable of appreciating the masterpiece of Americana that is “AJ and the Queen.”
AJ’s story—well acted by Izzy G. and Katerina Tannenbaum (as her mom) throughout—is a telling story of the opioid epidemic across our nation. RuPaul—who’s acting was a little choppy in the first episode or two—really shone in his most emotional scenes no matter who he played opposite. You just can’t go wrong with a little love and encouragement from Mama Ru and the character, Robert doesn’t disappoint. Flawed yet loveable, the character is a thinly disguised version of the RuPaul we know from Drag Race. As Ruby Red, Rupaul performs flawlessly. It was exciting to see so many Drag Race queens coming alive and bringing comic relief and killer performances. I LOVED Michael-Leon Woolley as Louis and the ways the show smartly engaged his character as someone capable and not to be pitied. I SO appreciated the DIVERSITY—class, race, ethnicity, ability, cultures, etc the viewers get to see as Ruby and AJ travel around the country. Interested after the first episode, I was HOOKED after the third. THANK YOU, Michael Patrick King and RuPaul, for this dramatic, hokey, sexy, cheesy, loving, warm and relatable piece of TV history. I cried, I laughed, I wanted to hug everyone. No matter whether a second season comes to be, “AJ and the Queen” is sure to be a cult classic.
