Although it seemed "off" at a few points, it is an excellent memento of the time. Even with families that did not cut ties over being gay, it was tense and at times unpleasant. Even both clerics seemed more nuanced than I had expected.
The specter of HIV is more chilling in the time of a new unknown retro viral challenge. In a time when a new HIV infection can be controlled long term, it is immensely important to remember those early days. My own positive test was about the same - mid 80s - and I had forgotten. The sense of uncertain certain doom was constant. And I was one of the lucky ones.

I have seen criticism that the film is formulaic. Given the time and the set up, the outcome was almost certain. It was the journey that I came back for. Even the families grew - not as much as hoped - but they grew. Glad I watched it.
