This movie is actually a dramatization of how the US Military, especially the US Air Force and the CIA, used heroin sales to finance their illegal wars in Laos and Cambodia before, during and after the Vietnam War.
I was drafted into the US Army in 1967 and participated in the illegal war in Vietnam from April to April 1968 to 1969. Toward the end of my tour there was, all of a sudden, an abundance of heroin available for the troops to buy. And they did. When you are in daily combat you'll do almost anything to escape the horror and fear of war.
Where did these drugs come from? Not the Vietnamese. They smoked raw opium and marijuana but had no way to refine opium into heroin. It was widely believed at the time that the US Air Force and the CIA were bringing this deadly drug to the troops to finance their illegal operations. That's what the common belief was in Vietnam so you can imagine my surprise and shock when I first saw the movie "Air America".
Here's the lesson I hope you will learn. Never, ever underestimate the level of corruption and depravity of the US Government and corporations who profit from war. They don't give a damn about your sons and daughters who join the military. Their lives mean nothing to this corrupt combine of corruption.
