When I first heard about Eighth Grade, I expected a cynical perspective on middle school in the age of social media, as most movies revolving around the subject seem to take such an approach. I was pleasantly surprised. The movie gives a look into the life of an eighth grade girl named Kayla, who is navigating growing up as an outcast. The portrayal of this character was empathetic and realistic, allowing the movie to touch on subjects such as peer pressure, social anxiety, confidence, and growing into yourself without coming off as pretentious. The script was accurately written for the age of the characters, harmonizing with a fantastic cast and set. Truly a wonderful movie.
