The negative reviews of this film are flawed as it is being judged by today''s aesthetic. Joaquin Phoenix was perfectly cast as he exuded a dual persona reflected in his actions, letters and speech: desperately in love with Josephine; serene and resonant with foes and allies. He may have not exuded much emotion, but his words, writings and actions indicated otherwise. His tantrums and disappointments were felt, but he wasted no time in overcoming his shortfalls both personally and publicly. I can't envision a better actor to play the part of Bonaparte with such complexity. In exile, he surrounded himself in beauty and did not give up. The deep texture and warm colors of the cinematography mirrored the realism of the era and was reminiscent of Eugene Isabey and Antoine Jean Gros. I enjoyed it immensely.

I like it for the story and the suspense. To be honest I didn't see a few things coming. The acting, however, was a little corny, especially between the cops. C'mon in the middle of a missing person's case where the whole town is feverishly scoping it out, they are going to blow up pin ups of a cop they find arrogant? Too many thought provoking, soulful exchange of glances. Zoe Kazan's overacting and over everything is just not believable. She act's like a drama inflicted 7th grader. And, she is NOT pretty. Not that that matters anymore - and I wouldn't say that; but they push her on us like she is and every guy is enamored with her. She has style and she has super skinniness, but that is about it. I like Sophie; and her kids are amazing. The storyline moves a long at a good pace, but it is just a little to network TVish for my taste. Maybe the directors and writers need to sit down to an episode or two of Broadchurch. Every moment does not have to be a confrontation or an altercation or a stomping off or a slamming door..............And while I could care less about diversity - I hate stereotypes. And all the characters are stereotypical of their race, their profession, their age, their class, etc.

This wasn't an eye opener. If you own an iPhone it was assembled by workers at one of three firms in China: Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron. The biggest and most famous, Foxconn, came to international prominence in 2010 when an estimated 18 of its employees tried to kill themselves. This is the American Way. This is the Trump way. This is how Ivanka makes her millions. As Americans, we do not have to dig far to learn the truth. But few of us want to know. We go to church, we pray, we think we are following the rules. The mentality is "we are giving them a better life," not acknowledging the inhumanity and aligning ourselves with the tyrants who have come to rule through genocide and religious persecution after World War I.The US operating in 3rd world countries are the same as the captains of industry who owned the sweatshops 150 years ago and the slave owners before them. Yet people in this country are proud of the word capitalism (greed) and wear it like a badge. And our current administration is all for union breaking. Jobs may come back to America but at what cost and under what conditions? Be careful what you wish for.
