I believed we needed healthcare reform, even before the end of the 1990s. It is too complex, too bureaucrat, too indifferent to "customers", aka "patients," and too secretive. Try finding out who the very best heart surgeon in your town is, if you don't believe me. Try to find out which hospitals have the best results for each specialty. The costs are hugely inflated by the grasping hands of too many stakeholders, and there are too many interest groups fighting to keep their piece of the pie. I read this in 2008, and I wrote to various public officials urging them to read this book, and then bring Dr. Porter in to help advise them. He has prescriptions in this highly detailed book for vastly improving U.S. healthcare by using the power of the competitive free enterprise system. Obamacare ignored nearly every aspect Porter covered, and is more convoluted than it was before. It is not too late for us to build a world-leading healthcare system that will both improve care for all and reduce costs in the bargain.
