Like all the early tv westerns, there was a centering on moral messages. One had to listen closely to the dialogue, because Bean was just as much a detective as a judge.
There were several technical errors. The most noticeable is that Bean always wore an English top hat and greatcoat. In reality, the desert heat would have precluded wearing such garb.
