The abiding memory of this film for me is the fact that this character Israel does indeed represent many empowered African Americans of the 60s/70s era who struggled day to day to drive change through civil unrest like their parents, but increasingly also through politics and the law. Like Israel, many never got their voices heard directly but were nevertheless the conduit for changes that permeated through to state and country legislation over the course of the 80s, 90s and 00s. Washington as usual is completely absorbing to watch however the other characters are not fleshed out to any great degree and the film suffers to some extent as a consequence. However would still strongly recommend for Washington fans out there.
