I believe it portrayed how much society has changed since the era took place in when it comes to mental illness. Being it was based on true events makes it even more realistic. There was such a stigma attached to mental illness at that time and psychiatrists were just at the tip of the iceberg, so to speak, learning that mental illness is very treatable and people don’t need to be locked away. Now, it’s talked about even more, psychiatry has made strides in treatment and the causes from a neurological stand- point. Although improved, mental illness still carries some of that stigma, that if one suffers from some version of mental illness, that they can not be productive members of society. Case on point, EXCELLENT movie and well acted and directed.
