Not gonna lie I think the fact that I was more of a beauty & the beast/lion king kid and probably watched the little mermaid twice as versus 100x as a kid, this really helped me to appreciate this version. Going in with minimal expectations, most especially with the lack luster quality of Disney remakes, I was pleasantly surprised! The film did a great job at keeping the essence of what made the original so great whilst refreshing it for new audiences. Given I can’t be too critical on a film made for children I’d have to say as a 30 year old adult man that grew up during the “Disney Renaissance” era The Little Mermaid 2023 honors nostalgia whilst entertaining the next generation. My original reservations for this film revolved around its diverse cast, Prince Eric casting, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. I have to say all of which were well done, Melissa really brought Ursula to life while making it her own with her comedic timing and excellent voice, Prince Eric really had great on-screen chemistry with Ariel from their first meeting, and diversity absolutely made the show that much better whilst being regionally appropriate as it seems the island Kingdom would be based off Caribbean culture (plus Eric’s parentage is easily explained).
The two things I feel this film could’ve either done better or done away with entirely is Prince Eric’s solo singing bit, and that very Saturday morning/kids-bop esque rap from Akwafinas, Scuttle. However all in all this was a thoroughly entertaining, coherent and well performed remake of our classic Little Mermaid! Wether you have a family, or just a nostalgic millennial this film is for everyone!
